On Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at approximately 6:35 P.M. the Waterloo Police Department and Waterloo Fire & Rescue responded to a motor vehicle collision at E. 1st Street and Sycamore Street that resulted in a vehicle rollover. Six month old, Liam Xander Mwanje, died from injuries that were received in this collision.
On Wednesday, September 20th, 2017, Derrick Earl Johnson, age 36, of Waterloo was arrested and charged with Homicide by vehicle/operating under influence in Black Hawk County District Court. At the time of the collision Johnson had a blood alcohol level of .069, and tested positive for cannabis and cocaine.
The Waterloo Police Department was assisted in this investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
