Suspect jumps in river

On Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at approximately 3:40 PM, Waterloo Police were sent to 425 Pine Street to investigate a child custody issue. The reporting party, Shashone Marquand, age 18, stated her child had been taken by the father, Clifton Antonio Jenes Jr., age 19.

Officers found that the child had been taken to its grandmother's house on Fowler Street. When police arrived, on Fowler Street, Jenes took off in his vehicle, a black 1998 Chevy Malibu. Jenes lead officers on a pursuit that ended when Jenes slowed his vehicle on the 4th Street Bridge and jumped out. Officers stopped the vehicle, while Jenes climbed onto the railing of the bridge. Officers tried to talk Jenes down from the railing, but Jenes jumped into the Cedar River.

Officers followed Jenes as he floated down the river, finally taking him into custody near the 11th Street Bridge. Jenes was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Criminal charges are pending against Jenes.
