On Sunday, March 9, 2014 at approximately 1:39 PM, Waterloo Police and Waterloo Fire Rescue were sent to West 6th Street and Commercial Street on report of a motor vehicle accident.  Both vehicles were northbound on W.6th Street when a 2013 Chevrolet Impala in the middle lane tried to turn left onto Commercial. Another vehicle, a 2011 Ford Pickup,  was in the left lane and when the Impala turned, the Pickup struck the Impala, and pushed it into the utility pole on the northwest corner of the intersection.

The driver of the Impala died from his injuries. He was identified as Scott James Thomson, age 55, of Garwin, IA. The pickup driver was identified as Tavious Jermaine Jenkins, age 34, of Waterloo, IA. Jenkins received minor injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.
