Traffic Accident driver and bicyclist identified

On 06-28-09 at approx. 20:41 hours, Waterloo Police were sent to W.3rd and Baltimore Street on report that a van had struck a bicyclist. The investigation shows that the van was headed northbound on W.3rd when the bicyclist, who was westbound on Baltimore, entered the intersection and was struck by the van. It appears that the bicyclist did not stop for the stop sign at the intersection.

The bicyclist was identified as Jonathan Kargus, age 9, 1210 W.3rd Street, Waterloo, IA. He was taken to Covenant Medical Center and later transfered to University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. His current medical condition is unknown.

The driver was identified as Frank Backes, age 62, of 209 W.5th Street, Apt. #314, Waterloo, Iowa. He was not injured in the accident.
