Patch

The Waterloo Police Department will join with other Black Hawk County law enforcement agencies by conducting a Special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP) project over the Memorial Day holiday and continuing on through the end of May.  Funding for this project is from a grant provided by the Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB).

GTSB staff has been reviewing data and they are seeing a trend with nighttime driving.  The data shows 50% of fatalities at night and 50% during the day.  The big difference is that 88% of the motoring public is driving during the day while only 12% is out at night.  The majority of this 12% appears to be high-risk drivers, the drivers who are more likely to be intoxicated, not wearing their seat belts and/or speeding.

During this project officers will be concentrating their efforts between the hours of 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. in an effort to save more lives.  Officers will be watching for impaired drivers as well as seat belt and speed violations.

Area law enforcement agencies will double their efforts in order to make the roadways safer this Memorial Day holiday.
