Waterloo Chief of Police Thomas J. Jennings is announcing that he will retire from the Waterloo Police Department effective Friday, January 8, 2010.  Chief Jennings, with 35 plus years of service with the department, was eligible to retire in September 2009.

Chief Jennings worked his way up through the ranks of the Waterloo Police Department before becoming chief.  During his tenure he had the opportunity to work in several units and divisions within the department, which made for a very enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Chief Jennings says that the City of Waterloo and the Waterloo Police Department have been a big part of his life for the past 35 plus years.  He said that it has been a great time and continues to be a great time, which makes his decision to retire that much more difficult.  He said he truly appreciates all of the people who are and were such an important part of the most enjoyable job anyone could have.

The Chief said that over the years he has had the privilege to work with a variety of city department heads as well as mayors, city council members, the public safety community in general and most importantly, the citizens of Waterloo, which have all been fantastic.

He said that he still loves the job, the community, the people, every part of it, but he knows this is the right time to take that step toward the next chapter in his life.  The Chief says he knows the department and the community has a bright future ahead of them and that he is leaving the department and the city in the very capable hands of the next generation of law enforcement professionals.
