Waterloo Police and School Officials Address Fan Behavior

For the past several years the Waterloo Police Department, in cooperation with the Waterloo Community Schools, has taken a proactive approach in dealing with inappropriate behavior at school sporting events by students, parents and fans. The message is that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.

Waterloo Police and school officials will provide a visible presence at football games due to the fact that these events take place in a larger setting.

Students and other spectators who cause a disturbance may not only face appropriate criminal charges, but may also be disciplined per school policy. Students, parents and other spectators should all adhere to school policy pertaining to Sportsmanship.

Students who are middle school age or younger, should be accompanied by an adult guardian. Those students or persons who tend to gather outside the gated/fenced area of the stadium will be encouraged to enter the game or asked to leave school property. Those persons who fail to leave may face criminal charges.

Waterloo Police and school officials want to create an environment where students and spectators can enjoy all sporting events without having to deal with unnecessary distractions or other inappropriate behavior.

Superintendent Gary Norris stated, “Adults are powerful role models for students. As we continue to teach our young people about the importance of good character, including respect, it’s essential that we show respect in real life situations. We invite our community, parents, friends, and others to join the fun at athletic events while demonstrating the highest level of sportsmanship.”
