Continues Investigation of Waterloo Officer Involved Shooting

Waterloo, IOWA --- After an early morning shooting, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation continues to collect information related to an incident in which Waterloo Police Officer Kyle Law discharged his weapon, hitting and killing 22 year old Derrick Ambrose Jr. of Waterloo, Iowa.

At approximately 01:42 this morning, Sunday, November 18, 2012, the
Waterloo Police Department received an emergency call indicating shots were
fired at local bar, New World Lounge II, 504 Riehl Street, Waterloo. Officer Kyle Law was working in the area and quickly arrived on scene.

Officer Law observed Derrick Ambrose pointing a gun at a crowd of people. Officer Law ordered Ambrose to drop the gun. Ambrose ran from the area and a
foot pursuit ensued.

Preliminary investigative findings indicate that during the foot pursuit, at the 500 Block of Riehl Street in Waterloo, Ambrose stepped out from behind a tree. Officer Law shot Ambrose, striking him in the head.  Ambrose died on scene.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Continues to investigate this incident, collecting witness statements and physical evidence. The State Medical Examiner will conduct on autopsy on Ambrose to confirm cause and manner of death on Monday, November 19, 2012.

Officer Kyle Law is 3-year veteran of the Waterloo Police Department. Per
agency policy, Law has been placed on administrative leave pending the final
outcome of the investigation.

Further details will be released by the Iowa DCI as they become available.
