On Thursday, February 28, 2013 at approximately 12:05 AM, Waterloo Police and Waterloo Fire Rescue were sent to the overpass at Sergeant Road (US Highway 63) and West Washington Street (US Highway 218) on report of a semi tractor and trailer hanging off the overpass.
Officers found that the vehicle had been traveling southbound on Washington when the driver lost control and the semi struck the cement railing and went off the overpass. The cab was dangling off of the overpass with the driver still inside. There was also gasoline burning on the ground below the semi. WFR put the fire out
A short time later, the driver was able to free himself from the cab and drop himself to the ground. He was not injured.
Later, as the city street crews and towing company were clearing the scene, the fire reignited and caused an explosion. No one was injured and WFR put the fire out. City road personnel and commercial wrecker drivers are still on the scene.
The driver, Victor Ivantsov, of St. Louis, MO was issued a citation for Failure to maintain control of vehicle.
