On Sunday, September 18, 2016 at about 1802 hours, Officers with the Violent Crimes Apprehension Team conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near Nevada and Mulberry Street. During the traffic stop, Officers made contact with a passenger, Kristopher Spates (Age 22, Waterloo). During the investigation, Officers attempted to conduct a pat down of Spates. During the pat down Officers located a loaded Glock 22 (.40Cal) on Spates' person. Spates was placed under arrest at that time. During the arrest, Spates spit in the face of one of the arresting Officers. He was eventually transported to the Black Hawk County Jail. During his detention, Spates also made life threatening comments to Officers. Spates was charged with Carrying Weapons, Interference with a weapon, Harassment 1st, Assault on Peace Officer causing bodily injury, and criminal mischief 5th. The gun was also discovered to be stolen from a 2015 burglary case.
