On Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at approximately 6:35 P.M. the Waterloo Police Department and Waterloo Fire & Rescue responded to a motor vehicle collision at E. 1^st Street and Sycamore Street that resulted in a vehicle rollover. Six month old, Liam Xander Mwanje, died from injuries that were received in this collision.

On Wednesday, September 20^th, 2017, Derrick Earl Johnson, age 36, of Waterloo was arrested and charged with Homicide by vehicle/operating under influence in Black Hawk County District Court. At the time of the collision Johnson had a blood alcohol level of .069, and tested positive for cannabis and cocaine.

The Waterloo Police Department was assisted in this investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
