On Saturday September 30, 2017 at approximately 7:50 P.M., Waterloo Police were dispatched to the area of the Highway 20 and Highway 218 mix-master on a report of a motor vehicle accident possibly involving a pedestrian. The reporting party, a driver is a semi-truck stated he believed he had hit either a deer or a person at that location. Officers responded to the area, where they located the victim, Richard James Murphy, age 53 of Tama, unresponsive on the roadway.

Murphy was transported to Covenant Medical Center then transferred to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics where he later died of the injuries he received from this accident.

This motor vehicle accident remains under investigation by the Waterloo Police Department.
