5-1-2019 Highway 218 Investigation
On Sunday, April 28th, 2019 at approximately 2:30 AM Waterloo Police responded to a motor vehicle accident on Highway 218, near the Greenhill exit. When police arrived they found a single vehicle off the roadway on the southbound side of 218, on the Greenhill off ramp. The vehicle was occupied by three adults and a dog.
At this time, we have determined that the victims vehicle was traveling southbound on 218 from Cedar Falls heading into Waterloo when a projectile penetrated the driver’s window, striking the driver, Micalla Rettinger age 25, in the neck, she later died from this injury. A passenger, Adam Kimball age 32 was also injured as a result of the projectile. He was treated at University of Iowa Hospitals and has since been released. The third passenger and a dog were uninjured.
In the evening hours of Monday, April 29th, 2019 Waterloo Police Investigators received a projectile from University Iowa Hospitals and Clinics that was recovered from the wound cavity of Adam Kimball. Initial indications are that the projectile is a bullet and it will undergo further examination consistent with a criminal investigation.
On April 30th, 2019 the autopsy was conducted on Micalla Rettinger, by the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office. The results of the autopsy are not available at this time.
We are still seeking the public’s help in locating anyone who may have been in the area Highway 218 between Cedar Falls and Waterloo on April 28th, 2019 around 2:30 AM. This includes both vehicle and foot traffic on or off the roadway along with anyone participating in any outdoor activities in this area. We continue to follow up all leads submitted by the community and are reviewing a multitude of surveillance and traffic cameras from the area.
