New Automated Traffic Enforcement Regulations in Waterloo

HF 2681, which regulates the use of Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE) within Iowa, was signed into law on May 17, 2024. To align with this state law, the Mayor and Council of Waterloo passed the final reading to enact a New Resolution to the Automated Traffic Enforcement on June 3^rd, 2024. These changes in the Resolution incorporate the State requirements into the municipal code.

Starting June 4^th, 2024, Waterloo police officers began issuing speeding citations through the ATE systems based on the following updated regulations:  Starting August 1^st, 2024, Waterloo will go from enforcement at 12mph over the speed limit to enforcement at 11mph over the limit to align with the below enforcement structure.

• Enforcement begins at: 11 mph over the speed limit
• Fee Structure:
  • 11 – 20 mph over the limit:  $75
  • 21 – 25 mph over the limit:  $100
  • 26 – 30 mph over the limit:  $250
  • 31+ mph over the limit:        $500
