Waterloo Police Make Arrest In Convenience Store Robbery
On Tuesday, March 3, 2009 shortly after 4:00 a.m., Waterloo Police officers responded to the Kum & Go convenience store at 1976 Franklin Street on the report of a robbery that had just occurred. The clerk told officers that a male, whose face was covered, wearing black colored clothing and armed with a handgun, entered the store and demanded money. The suspect then left the store with an undisclosed amount of money and ran from the area.
Officers responding to this call observed the suspect in the 500 block of Rhey Street and began pursuing him on foot. Within minutes the suspect was found hiding under the front porch of a house in the 500 block of Rhey Street and was taken into custody without further incident. Officers recovered a 9 mm handgun; they believe was used in the robbery, and money from the store.
Charged with robbery in the first degree is 16-year-old Martavis Lee Smith of 409 Independence Avenue in Waterloo. Smith will be held in the Black Hawk County Jail on a one hundred thousand dollar bond. Smith's picture will not be released at this time.
