Waterloo Police Officer Involved in Shooting Incident

On Monday, June 1, 2009 shortly before 8:30 am Waterloo Police officers were sent to the Department of Correctional Services at 527 East 5th Street to pick up 38-year-old Deon Lemar Mosley on a parole violation warrant.

Department of Correctional Services staff directed the first arriving officer to Mosley, who by now had entered a car and was preparing to leave the parking lot.  The officer motioned for Mosley to stop the car, but instead, Mosley accelerated towards the officer.  The officer then fired his duty pistol at the approaching vehicle and jumped out of the way of the car as it sped past him.

Other officers pursued the car several blocks until Mosley abandoned the car and began running on foot.  After a short foot pursuit Mosley was taken into custody in the 500 block of Dane Street without further incident.   Mosley was taken to the Black Hawk County Jail where he is being held on a parole violation warrant with a bond of $75,000.  Neither the officer nor Mosley was injured during this incident.

Following Waterloo Police Department policy, the officer involved was placed on leave with pay and the Iowa Department of Public Safety; Division of Criminal Investigation was called in to investigate this incident.

The media is asked to contact the Iowa Department of Public Safety Public Information Bureau at 515-725-6196 for further information about this investigation.
