Updated Information Concerning Officer Involved Shooting

On Saturday, July 11, 2009 around 11:30 pm Waterloo Police officers were investigating a hit and run property damage vehicle crash when the driver of the run vehicle ran from the officers.  The driver then started shooting at the pursuing officer and the officer shot back.  The driver ran from the area and officers were unable to locate this person.  This incident took place near a wooded area to the rear of the Olive Garden Restaurant at 1315 East San Marnan Drive. 

On Monday, July 13, 2009 around 2 pm Waterloo Police Department Investigators were told that a person of interest wanted in connection with this incident was going to Allen Hospital for treatment of a gun shot wound.

Investigators met with 21-year-old Darnell Garrette Demery of 607 West 6th Street in Waterloo and placed him under arrest for a no bond parole violation.  Demery was admitted to the hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening wound to his right arm.

The officer involved in this incident, 21-year-old Spencer Gann, with nearly one year of service with the department, has been reassigned to administrative duty per department policy.  Officer Gann was not injured during this incident.

This is an ongoing investigation and no other information will be released at this time.
